Bea McGarvey will provide an overview of formative assessment and effective feedback.
  • October 25: Heidi McGinley, RtI Support System Project Director, will discuss ways to incorporate student learning research into RtI design. Stephen Bowen, Maine's Education Commissioner, will provide an update on Maine's long-term educational planning followed by an educational policy discussion that will allow participants to apply what they know about student learning to potential state policy directions.

Maine's Common Core State Standards Initiative

school busThe Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is a significant and historic opportunity for states to collectively develop and adopt a core set of academic standards in mathematics and English language arts. CCSSI is jointly led by the National Governors Association (NGA) Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in partnership with Achieve, ACT, and the College Board.  It builds directly on recent efforts of leading organizations and states that have focused on developing college- and career-ready standards and ensures these standards are evidence- and research-based and internationally benchmarked to top-performing countries. These core standards represent critical learning targets for literacy and numeracy. Each state must decide whether or not to adopt these standards as its own.
