AdvocacyThe following was sent to the Education Committee of the Maine Legislature by Bob Jenkins, President of Maine CLA: June 30, 2009 The Maine Curriculum Leaders’ Association is a new organization. The MCLA represents a key leadership group of education in Maine, the curriculum leaders. As curriculum leaders, we see a need for us at the table during the discussion of graduation requirements. Curriculum leaders have a realistic view of the ways schools work and how initiatives will be received and implemented. Curriculum leaders interpret legislation that directly impacts student learning. They help parents, board members, teachers and other administrators understand legislation. Curriculum leaders are the ones who introduce new initiatives and find ways to successfully implement the initiatives in their districts. The Maine Curriculum Leaders’ Association proposes to establish a conduit of communication with the Legislature. This communication would enable a vibrant source of feedback and information for both Legislature and Maine’s curriculum leaders. The MCLA offers its extensive knowledge of education to the Maine Legislature in order to enhance the education of Maine’s students. Many members of the committee have a rich and vibrant past and present in Education. Members of the MCLA Board are looking forward to meeting with the committee or members individually to discuss the gains to be realized through such a relationship. I will contact Members of the Education Committee by August 12 to continue the conversation about how we can offer our services in the name of educating Maine’s children. If you would like to contact me prior to that date, I can be reached at 645-2297. Respectfully, Robert H. Jenkins, President
